Corinne Duchesne
Artist Statement / Bio
As artists we can talk about the most horrific examples of human cruelty. We can talk about the sumptuous beauty of the nude figure. We can even talk about the deep interpersonal connection of love-making. But heaven help us if we talk about a no holds barred, full on bacchanalian romp!
These mixed media pieces celebrate the animal pleasures of womanhood. They assert a human being's right to enjoy and explore the body and the influences that shape our self-perception. Fierceness of delight is exemplified by sharp contrasts of media, texture, value and imagery.
Collaged pieces of linocut prints (goats, patterns) bump and grind against outrageously- coloured, drawn and painted Barbie legs and curly haired vaginas and penises. Graphic in both senses of the word, these compositions are as full of humorous juxtapositions and energetic diagonals as their suggestive titles imply.
This work is both a reaction to and a questioning of the conversations of contemporary culture surrounding sex and identity. I am out to make friends with sex. I believe this curiosity is an open departure point for thinking and talking about sexuality, identity, and the choices we make . 'Wanna Play?'
