Mary Ellen Long

I live in a mountain setting and work directly in nature on surrounding lands, intervening in subtle ways with what is found and observed;  using handmade paper to mark, wrap, and expand natural form and elements;  burying paper under winter snows to document process and transition;  and arranging indigenous elements in symbolic forms. Photographic editioned books, gallery installation, video, and public projects bring this work into the mainstream.  I have worked with themes of environmental concern in Aspen, CO, San Rafael, CA, Kingston, Ontario, Cazenovia, NY, The Connemara Conservatory, Atlantic Center for the Arts, The Denver Botanical Gardens, and currently at The Highlands at Edgemont, Durango, CO.  In 2008, the film, Seeing the Forest for the Trees, The Art of Mary Ellen Long was made by Durango Community Access TV and documents my work.  Editioned books by the artist include Site and Spirit, Forest Echoes, Forest Rooms, and Detritus.  Images of one-of-a-kind books available by request.
