Robin Rosenthal is a visual artist, documentary filmmaker, and public practice artist. She has been developing creative place-keeping projects since 2015, when she was commissioned Artist-in-Residence for the Los Angeles County Arts Commission’s NEA Our Town-funded Antelope Valley Art Outpost initiative. She is the Founder and Artistic Director of Real93543, whose programming engages rural Southeast Antelope Valley residents in an arts-based process of strengthening local ownership and social connection—highlighting community-specific narratives through documentary media, arts education, and public art. She recently led the Artist-in-Residence team on the Lancaster Museum of Art and History’s #CountMeIn Census2020 engagement project aimed at building awareness and increasing census participation from the historically low-response neighborhood surrounding the museum. With a BA from the University of Pennsylvania and an MFA from Queens College, CUNY, Rosenthal taught studio art at San Antonio College and the San Antonio Art Institute, and exhibited her experimental video art nationally before relocating to Los Angeles to work in film and television. She is half of the Littlerock, CA-based Pony Highway Productions, whose immersive documentaries have aired on PBS and toured internationally. Their latest project, Mariposas del Campo, tells the stories of indigenous Mixtec and Zapotec teens from Oaxaca coming of age in the strawberry fields of Oxnard, California. Rosenthal’s documentary practice draws from her background as an artist, educator, and motion picture industry professional, and in turn informs and influences her work in creative place-keeping.
