Summer 2013 News from Jane Ingram Allen

As most of you know, I am back in the USA living in Santa Rosa, CA, just north of San Francisco.  I am still curating the Cheng Long Wetlands International Environmental Art Project (www.artproject4wetland.wordpress.com) and go back to Taiwan for several months each Spring to do this project and other projects as a visiting artist.  Here is some news about my art activities for this Summer and Fall:

June Papermaking Class at Santa Rosa Junior College, Santa Rosa, CA

I taught a class, “Asian and Western Papermaking with Local Plants” on June 22 and 23 at Santa Rosa Junior College.  During the class we made paper using Asian and Western techniques and local plant materials including cattail leaves, cottonwood bark and New Zealand Flax leaves.

July Teaching at Peters Valley School of Craft, Layton, NJ

This July I am on the East Coast of the USA visiting in Boston and NY and teaching two classes at Peters Valley School of Craft in Layton, NJ.  The classes are “Papermaking Around the World” July 19 – 23 and “Sculptural Papermaking July 26 – 30.  This is the website for more information about these classes: (http://www.petersvalley.org) I am looking forward to seeing this beautiful part of NJ in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.  Tim will be joining me for the two weeks at Peters Valley, and he also gets to take a photography course there.  We will return to Santa Rosa, CA on August 6.

September Artist-in-Residency and Public Art Project in Point Reyes California, September 5 – 25, 2013

I will be doing a residency in Point Reyes Station, CA, with Gallery Route One (www.galleryrouteone.org) from September 5 – 25.  For this residency I will be staying as an artist-in-residence in nearby Inverness, CA, at Lucid Art Foundation and working as an artist in the schools and with community participants in Point Reyes to do a collaborative public art installation in the Commons Area and extending down Main Street (Route 1) in Point Reyes Station.  I will also have a one-person exhibition at Gallery Route One, October 25 – Dec. 15, 2013.  My Residency Project with Gallery Route One in Point Reyes Station is supported by grants to GRO for this environmentally focused community art project.

During the residency project I will stay at Lucid Art Foundation (www.lucidart.org)

and also create some of my own artwork.  I will teach a two-day workshop for adults in Asian and Western Papermaking with Local Plants at Lucid Art Foundation, Inverness on Sept. 7 and 8.  For more information about this workshop, contact GRO (Tel: 415-663-1347).

Going to Korea 9/30 – 10/5 to Speak at the 1st International Nature Art Curator’s Conference

I have been invited to make a presentation at an international conference in South Korea for curators of art in nature exhibitions.  The organization Yatoo (www.yatooi.com), an artist’s organization in South Korea, has organized and hosted art in nature exhibitions and residencies for international artists since 2004.  For this conference Yatoo has invited 10 international curators of art in nature events to come to Korea for 5 days, September 30 – Oct. 5, 2013 to discuss the events they curate in other countries and exchange ideas with each other and with the Korean participants at the conference.  The conference will help to spread the idea of having more art events that emphasize the environment and an understanding of nature.   At the conference I will make a presentation about the Cheng Long Wetlands International Environmental Art Project in Taiwan and tell more about the ideas behind this project.  For information and photos of the Cheng Long art project, see the Blog at http://artproject4wetland.wordpress.com

Speaking at the TransCultural Exchange Conference on International Opportunities for Artists in Boston, October 10-13, 2013

I have also been invited to speak at the 3rd biennial conference on International Opportunities for Artists in Boston that is organized by TransCultural Exchange, a non-profit organization for the spread of cultural exchange through art and artist-in-residency projects.  I will speak at this conference about the Cheng Long Wetlands International Environmental Art Project that I have curated each year in Taiwan since 2010 and encourage interested and qualified artists to apply for this international opportunity.  For more information and to register for this conference, see the website at www.transculturalexchange.org

October 2013 – January 2014 Artist-in Residency at Sitka Center for Art & Ecology, Otis, Oregon

After returning from the conferences in Korea and Boston, I will go to Sitka Center for Art & Ecology (www.sitkacenter.org) for a residency to pursue my own work with handmade paper art using local materials.  I have been awarded a residency for three months from October 15, 2013 to January 10, 2014, and I plan to work on a new series of mixed-media environmental artworks using paper I make from plants found at Sitka Center and interact with artists in different disciplines as well as writers and naturalists.  Sitka is located in a beautiful natural area on the central coast of Oregon.  Tim will accompany me for this residency to document my work and enjoy taking photographs of the area and people.
