Green Cafe Network (GCN: www.greencafenetwork.org) proudly announces the launch of the SIGNS FOR SUSTAINABILITY DESIGN CONTEST!

GCN invites your students to help in the effort to green neighborhood cafes— enabling these venues to conserve resources, reduce waste and inspire their employees and customers to practice and promote sustainability.

Top entries in FIVE different categories will receive a CASH PRIZE of $200, and other prizes are available including gear from Patagonia! Be sure the check out the contest website for full details (http://greencafenetwork.org/contest/).

The Goal for Contestants: to bridge creative style with environmental responsibility by designing hip, informative, easy to understand signs for neighborhood cafes, in one or more of the following categories:

– Lights: reminder to turn off the light, mainly for restrooms
– Water: reminder to conserve water at the sink

– Paper Towels: reminder to conserve disposable towels
– Napkins: reminder to conserve paper napkins
– Waste: reminder to put it in the right place-identifying recycling, compost & landfill bins (note: there are two sub-categories for waste)

Contest Deadline: November 1st, 2011.  Submission Details: You will need to supply both a 72 DPI JPG version of your design (for display on the web) and a 300 DPI PDF version for print. Each file should be no larger than 7 megabytes in size.  The submissions should be made online at the following URL: http://greencafenetwork.org/contest/register-enter-the-contest/

Winning Designs: will be featured on GCN’s website with the designer’s name, contact info., and a link to his or her website and/or portfolio, if applicable.  These signs will be available at no cost for cafes and restaurants to download and then put to use in their everyday operations – so designers will have the satisfaction of seeing their work used to encourage environmental responsibility in our local cafes.  Cash Prizes will also be awarded for the best design in each category.

About the Contest:  Why cafes?
Last  year, Americans were estimated to use over 23 billion paper cups and coffeehouses contribute to massive amounts of waste, energy use and water consumption in our communities every day.  On a recent survey of 40 cafes in the Bay area, we found that only 16% had signage encouraging people to conserve napkins or paper towels, and 51% had a waste station with only one bin for trash (even though commercial recycling and composting is widely available and some of those cafes recycle and compost behind the counter).  Considering the U.S. has over 25,000 coffee shops, these retail cafes present an incredible opportunity to help reduce the specialty coffee industry’s collective environmental impacts.

Also included with this email is the contest flyer – which we would appreciate your help in forwarding electronically to anyone you know who might be interested.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH for any help you can provide in promoting this contest!
