Once more WEAD is producing an environmental art exhibit for the BIONEER’S CONFERENCE, this year taking place Oct 14-16.  WEAD has been producing Bioneers ecoart exhibits for more than 10 years.

Sited in the Marin Civic Center Exhibition Building hallway gallery, this year’s exhibit is called ART AT THE DUMP and features works from the RECOLOGY (SF “Dump”) art residency program.

WEAD’s cofounder and Bioneer’s Lifetime Achievement Honoree JO HANSON (1918–2007) inspired, lobbied for, helped to craft, and worked on the birth of Recology’s ecoart residency program in the late 1980’s.  Susan Leibovitz Steinman, WEAD cofounder with Jo, is a past Recology resident who in 1992 created its drought tolerant, ecological 3 acre Sculpture Garden. The Garden now includes a living memorial “wild apple” orchard/installation in Jo’s honor.

Art at the Dump exhibition features artwork made by artists during their residencies at Recology San Francisco, the Solid Waste Transfer and Recycling Center for the City.

The Artist in Residence Program was founded in 1990 as a way to educate the public about the abundance of usable materials that enter the waste stream and support Bay Area artists. Artists work in a studio at the facility and scavenge for materials to make art in the Public Disposal and Recycling Area (the dump). The residence program is the cornerstone of an arts and education initiative that has grown exponentially over more than twenty years and now includes an exhibitions program, a permanent art collection, a three-acre sculpture garden, and tours for more than 5,000 children and adults per year.
