ASSISTANT PROFESSOR – ART AND DESIGN EDUCATION POSITION SUMMARY:
 
The Department of Art and Design Education in the School of Art and Design at Pratt Institute invites applications for a full-time tenure track faculty position at the Assistant Professor rank to begin Fall 2014. Located on Pratt’s historic 25-acre campus in the culturally diverse neighborhood of Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, the Department of Art and Design Education draws students from the worlds of art, design, and architecture, and endeavors to be a dynamic and cross-disciplinary department at the forefront of the field, providing a stimulating, challenging and supportive environment for our students, faculty, and staff.
The ideal candidate will be both an experienced art and design educator (K-12) who engages innovative, interdisciplinary teaching approaches in higher education, and a practicing artist/scholar with an active exhibition or publication record. We seek applicants who will be active participants in re-shaping the field of K-12 level art and design education in the context of policy shifts in urban public education, the growth of community arts programs and the evolution of social practice in the fields of art and design.
 
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in art and design education including mentoring pre-service teachers.
• Contribute to developing a strong student teaching experience in the program through community and school partnerships and coordination of student teaching and fieldwork placements.
• Participate in developing, refining and implementing curriculum that meets the needs of NYSED teacher certification.
• Maintain a solid and consistent record of creative, scholarly and professional activities. • Serve on Department, School and Institute committees and provide other service to the Institute. • Work in the Saturday Art School, the department’s teaching laboratory, as needed. • Perform all other related activities as required.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
An earned doctorate in art education or a related field is preferred; ABD or an MFA with substantial experience (included but not limited to experience working in schools, museums or community based organizations K-12) will be considered. Applicants must have a minimum of three years’ teaching experience at the K-12 level and one year of college level teaching experience. Knowledge of teacher certification and experience mentoring pre-service teachers is essential; knowledge of special education, English-language learning, technology or literacy is a plus. Candidates must also demonstrate a record of scholarly research/publications and/or evidence of professional art or design practice. New York State certification in visual arts or qualifications to obtain certification a plus.
SALARY is commensurate qualifications and experience.
