Michele Guieu’s “Species Encounter: A Participative & Collaborative Poetic Adventure”, an installation consisting of a 20-foot veiled and lit corridor, will be displayed on South First Street, between San Salvador Street and Williams Street in downtown San Jose just for one night, during the SubZERO festival in downtown San Jose, June 7.

Visitors are invited to create their own species or to use one that I designed for the project, to enter the corridor and to walk behind the veil to interact with other people and their creatures.

Visitors are welcome to visit the installation before night and draw and cut their own animal or plant or hybrid, and come back at night to play! They can also directly tape their creature on the veil at any time for everyone outside the corridor to enjoy all night.

All the material needed (paper, cardboard, masking tape and bamboo skewers) is provided. The Visitors are welcome to keep their paper creatures, otherwise all the creatures will be recycled at the end of the performance and the bamboo skewers will be composted.

About Michele Guieu
Michele Guieu has exhibited in France and throughout the United States. Originally from Marseille, France, Michele lived in Senegal, Africa and Paris. She moved to the US in 2000. Her installations weave personal events such as the places and landscapes she visits and has lived, her childhood, and now, motherhood, with global and environmental issues. Photos and video footage form the foundation of her work, which also incorporates drawings and objects. She received a MA in graphic design from the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris (ENSAD). Her work was selected for numerous exhibitions including the Subzero Festival in San Jose, ZER01 Biennial in Silicon Valley, and Currents 2012: the Santa Fe International New Media Festival.
