EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR POSITION SPECIFICATIONS
The Organization
Founded in 1999, The Crucible is a nonprofit arts organization located in Oakland, CA,
that fosters a collaboration of arts, industry and community. Offering over 500 day
time, evening and weekend classes and workshops in fine and industrial arts, the
organization serves over 5,000 adults, teens and children annually. The Crucible
promotes creative expression, reuse of materials, and innovative design while serving
as an accessible arts venue for the general public. From welding to woodworking to
firedancing to jewelry making, The Crucible is the best-equipped industrial arts facility
in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The Crucible has an annual budget of approximately $2.2 million and a staff of 20. In
addition to serving adults and youth, The Crucible provides rental space to local
artists at its 56,000 square foot facility, and has historically produced an annual Fire Arts
Festival in July, and presented a theatrical performance every January featuring a
collaborative mix of fine art, fire art, music and dance. For more information, visit our

Primary Position
The Executive Director will manage the daily operations of the organization. Reporting
to the Board of Directors, the ED oversees a team that includes Creative Director,
Managing/Finance Director, Development Director, Studio Operations Director,
Program Director, and Event Coordinator.
The Executive Director provides the leadership, strategic direction, management and
supervision for all Crucible efforts. Major areas of responsibility include operational and
strategic planning, institutional advancement, governance and financial management,
community and stakeholder relations. The Executive Director works closely with the
Board of Directors to identify goals and strategies to ensure financial and operational
stability and advises the Board on all aspects of The Crucible’s profile and activities.
Primary Responsibilities
• Lead strategic planning processes for development of short and long range goals
and objectives and ensure implementation, evaluation and communication of results
• Develop a proactive, creative leadership role in the identification, cultivation, and
solicitation of individual, corporate and foundation contributions
• Provide support to best utilize the talents and resources of the Board, stimulating
involvement and recruitment of new members
• Act as the organization’s face and voice to press, media and the public
• In collaboration with the Creative Director, provide vision and philosophical
direction for programming, policy and procedure development
• Create opportunities to increase the effectiveness of the organization and expand
its influence
• Build collaborative relationships with neighborhood and community leaders,
funders and other organizations, public and private, to advance the mission and
vision of The Crucible
• Articulate the mission and vision to a broad constituency including supporters,
partners, media and government officials
• Manage the organization’s talent acquisition, development and evaluation at all levels
• Maintain an entrepreneurial and professional working atmosphere where open
communication encourages creativity, stability and achievement
Qualifications
• 5 + years experience in an executive director role for a non-profit, or its
equivalent
• Proven ability to direct fundraising campaigns and manage individual supporter
relationships
• Demonstrated success in revenue generation, board management and community
relations
• Ability to translate vision into a sustainable organization
• Strength in financial management
• Track record of success in recruiting, managing and developing senior staff
Background in arts education highly desired
Compensation
The salary range for the position is $90,000 – $100,000.
