Avery was born and raised in Oakland and has also been shaped by Berkeley and New Orleans. She holds a degree in sociology and continues to learn by taking community college classes and hosting reading groups. She also facilitates an engaged Buddhist group and holds monthly creative events. She is currently excited about world building (imaginary and physical), community gardening, subaltern studies, and remediation work.
