Mississippi Museum Of Art
Gwendolyn A. Magee’s mastery of quilting and artistic vision enabled her to tell of the difficult history of slavery in America. In these fascinatingly beautiful and profound quilts, most of which are from the permanent collection of the Mississippi Museum of Art, the artist used appliqué, embroidery, layered fabrics, and embellishments, such as rhinestone jewelry, to depict slavery’s torturous practices. Cost: $10 adults, $8 seniors, $5 students (includes admission to This Light of Ours: Activist Photographers of the Civil Rights Movement). FREE Children 5 and under. FREE Museum members.
Gwendolyn A. Magee (1943-2011) received the esteemed Ford Fellowship in 2007 through United States Artists. In 2011, she received the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Visual Arts for the state of Mississippi. Her work has been exhibited in museums nationally, and was acquired by the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC, in 2002. Magee’s solo exhibition, Journey of the Spirit: The Art of Gwendolyn A. Magee, and accompanying book was organized and published by the Mississippi Museum of Art in 2004.
